What are...Management Systems?

Archives use Content Management and Digital Asset Management tools to organize, track, and make accessible archival records.

Content Management System

Often abbreviated to CMS, these tools organize and track metadata about records. City Archives & Special Collections uses ArchivesSpace as a content management system for its finding aids. For example, you will not find letters written to the mayor in ArhivesSpace, but you will find out for which mayors there are letters available to view.

Digital Asset Management System

Also referred to Digital Asset Management and the abbreviations DAM or DAMS, these tools are used for the organization and storage of digital assets. These may be records that were digitized, or born-digital records. City Archives & Special Collections hosts its digital assets on Contentdm.
