Riders’ Digest

Riders' Digest

New Orleans Public Service inc, (NOPSI) began publishing the Riders’ Digest on September 15, 1947 as a free weekly brochure for passengers on the company’s streetcars and busses. Copies were placed in holders inside each NOPSI vehicle.

Riders’ Digest issues served a number of purposes. They were a convenient and efficient means for NOPSI to communicate company information to its customers. They also allowed NOPSI to perform a useful “public service” by advertising community events and providing important information to the citizens of the company’s service area. NOPSI also used the Riders’ Digest as a way to entertain and educate its customers by providing a series of historical vignettes under the title “Did you know?” The columns offer information on a variety of topics in a brief format.

This page provides an index to the subjects covered by the weekly (later bi-weekly) “Did you know?” columns.  It is derived from a card file created by former staff member Glenn L. McMullen during the mid-1970s. The original card file covers the period from September 1956 through August 1976. It is not complete–some individual columns went unindexed for various reasons, 1975 is not included at all, some cards lacked the date of the referenced column and were thus excluded from this online index. The columns for 1949-August 1956 were excluded from the original because they comprised numerous “one-liner” anecdotes rather than being devoted to a single subject. There has been no concerted effort to complete this index or to fill in the gaps in the card file. Each entry is indexed by subject heading.  To use the index you can sort by any column or use the search bar on the upper right-hand corner of the index.

City Archives & Special Collections has a complete file of the original Riders’ Digest publications through August 11, 1980 (it apparently continued to be produced through March 16, 1981). They are available for use in person by appointment.  Digital Access is in process.
