Index to Marriage Licenses

City Court, 1807-1808

In New Orleans, the judge of the City Court was authorized to issue marriage licenses to credentialed priests or ministers. In 1809 an act was passed nullifying the required bond, stating that it was no longer necessary for a priest or minister to obtain a license in order to celebrate marriages. The City Court Bonds of Priests and Ministers and Marriage Licenses volume records these bonds issued to priests and ministers. Additionally, it records 106 marriage licenses issued by the City Court during the period 4/20/1807 to 12/31/1808. The index below lists the marriage licenses recorded in the above mentioned volume. The licenses themselves have not survived.
