Record of Next of Kin

City Insane Asylum, 1875-1877

The following is a transcript of the next of kin of patients in the City Insane Asylum. It includes the patient’s name and the name and address of the person to be referred to. The original volume is in very poor condition with many pages either cut or torn out. Most of the entries are overwritten with “died,” “removed,” “released,” etc. A note at the end of the volume show the following statistics: “white men 54, white women 52, col’d men 15, col’d women 25.” Also included in this transcript are names of patients that were recorded in the index to this volume, yet no corresponding record of next of kin was recorded. This is indicated by a note included in the “next of kin” column. The note is not original to the volume. Researchers can view microfilm of these records under call number mf FM415, 1875-1877.

This volume was originally transcribed by Colleen Fitzpatrick, New Orleans Volunteer Association (NOVA)
