Separated records from the following criminal courts: Criminal Court of the First District, First City Court, Second City Court, Superior Criminal Court, Justices of the Peace, Recorders’ Courts, Second Judicial District Court, Criminal District Court. 

Researchers should note that some criminal cases were tried in First District Court; separated records from First District Court are indexed with Civil Courts. 

Researchers should also review the Additional Criminal Court Records that were separated from their court of origin. These are indexed and housed separately from the Stray Court Records and include Police Courts, Justices of the Peace, and Recorders Courts.

First District Recorder's Court1865Mittimus for William Smith to be brought to Parish Prison for safe keeping until he could produce bail of $1000. He was accused by Dr. J. P. First District Recorder's CourtState vs Charles W. Cammack1870Extensive testimony of several witnesses in a murder case. The victim was John Nixon, who was shot on the sidewalk outside the Boston Club following an argument inside.316

First Recorder's Court1457State vs C. W. Johnson1890Several contracts between the Crescent City Clothing Club and named individuals. The Club was to include twenty people who paid $1 each week and, in return, were to receive a suit of made to order clothes each week. Also included are several slips identifying recipients of suits and inviting prospective members to visit them and gauge their satisfaction. Also included are several numbered coupons, each with a contract number indicated. The contracts identify the members and give the occupation and address of each. Accompanied by an envelopr marked, "Evidence, State vs C. W. Johnson, obtaining money, etc." We know from newspapers that Johnson was manager of the Club. Also accompanied by an envelope addressed to Rev. D. S. A. Mahony in Chicago.2612

First Recorder's Court7802State vs J. R. Alcee Gauthreaux1880Affidavit charging him with breach of trust and embezzlement. Gauthreaux was Civil Sheriff of Orleans Parish. Also included is #7803, carrying the same charge, but with different particulars.2810

Fourth District Recorder2702State of Louisiana vs Jean Marie Barthel1853He was accused of keeping a coffee house and billiard table on Magazine between St. Mary and St. Andrew without a city license. Three witnesses are named, with a note that they were from the Magazine Market, but no testimony is present in the record. The Recorder sent the matter up to the First District Court. Barthel's attorney argued that the license ordinance was unconstitutional.1617

Fourth District Recorder's CourtState vs Nicholas Gorman1869Charged with arson of a stable. Included are the affidavit, statements of witnesses, and witnesses' bond.318
Criminal District CourtState vs J. T. Massey1891Documents from an envelope (with Clerk's Office, Criminal District Court as the return address) marked, "J. T. Massey, #1219_" Includes items from the Pullman's Palace Car Co.--passenger checks, porter checks, occupancy reports, and form no. 19s. Massey is indicated on the items as a conductor. The items have information about berths, including names of some passengers, on routes between St. Louis and New Orleans during 1889-1891. Discrepancies between the conductor and ticket agents appear to be at least part of the issue at hand.2919

Criminal District Court1896Act of sale, tax bills, tax receipts, and a fire insurance policy for a house on Force Street between Elysian Fields and Frenchmen Streets. Jane Holloway was the owner. Notes on the documents indicate that they were filed as evidence by the state. They were signed by A. J. Desmond, clerk of Criminal District Court. The number 2648 also appears on one of the items.3028

When she picked the coin up, Morrell claimed that it was his and brutally assaulted and struck the child. He included details of his investigation of the fire, including the fact that Deron had insured his furniture for $7400 when Youenes considered it to be worth no more than $4000. Criminal District Court1924Documents from an envelope with Clerk of Criminal District Court's return address and marked, "Special Petty Jury ordered, May term, 1924." Included is an extract from the minutes of the court, May 5, 1924 listing names drawn from the jury wheel but not found by the Sheriff. Also included is another extract, dated May 15, 1924 commanding the jury commissioners to draw a Special Petty Jury of seventy-five persons. Also included are two copies of the jury list for the May 1924 term.306

Criminal District Court1924Documents from an envelope with Clerk of Criminal District Court's return address and marked, "Special Petty Jury ordered for January 1924." Included is an extract from the minutes of the court, January 7, 1924 listing persons not found by the Sheriff and otherwise removed from the jury wheel. Also included is another extract, dated January 7, 1924 commanding the jury commissioners to draw a Special Petty Jury. Also included is a handwritten list of names not found, moved, and out of the city. Also included are twenty-three individual jury notices with names and addresses and, in some cases, notes such as "excused," etc.309

Includes a letter from the District Attorney, March 1, 1918, to the Judge of Second City Criminal Court, suggesting the amount of bail to be required. Also includes the Coroner's autopsy protocol, February 18, 1918. Also includes an envelope containing the 38 caliber bullet found in the body of Lewis. Also includes the following documents found in an envelope from the District Attorney's Office: homicide report, February 18, 1918; supplemental homicide report, February 19, 1918; and signed statements of Green and three witnesses.2926

Criminal District Court1496State vs J. P. Wall1891Includes documents from First Recorder's Court #1523, State vs James A. Speirs. Speirs was accused by Wall of malicious trespass in the town of Tangipahoa and with fleeing from the town to avoid prosecution. The affidavit in that case shows that Speirs was discharged. Also included is a telegram from Wall asking the Chief of Police in Tangipahoa to hold Speirs (as an absconding debtor) until he (Judge Wall) arrives by train. Apparently, the documents were used as evidence in prosecuting Wall for false imprisonment and perjury (they were in an envelope marked, "#1496, J. P. Wall, false imprisonment & perjury).2921

A good amount of detail is included in the report.291
