Historic District Landmarks Commission

The Historic District Landmarks Commission (HDLC) is responsible for preserving and protecting the architectural character of the City of New Orleans through the regulation of locally designated historic districts and landmarks. The jurisdiction of the commission includes all exterior architectural features of structures within their respective areas. Beginning in 1976, the commission conducted a series of surveys of designated historic districts, and a few neighborhoods that were being considered for historic designation. Researchers can consult the surveys and accompanying slides for information about existing structures. HDLC materials are available to view in the City Archives by appointment.

  • Surveys

    The formats of the various surveys and the amount of information recorded in a survey changed over time. Individual pages in a survey generally include a photograph and description of the structures surveyed, but additional information may be included. Available to view by appointment in the City Archives.

  • Slides

    These slides were created by staff at the HDLC for internal use. The nature of the slides varies greatly. Some images will simply show the exterior of a structure while others may focus on the details of the exterior such as the gates.

  • Photographs

    A series of loose photographs taken by HDLC staff during the course of business. The photographs are arranged by the street name when given, though a number remain unidentified.
